Those who know me know that I am always up for a roadtrip and on the move. I don’t spend many weekends at home (though I am home this weekend and SO PUMPED for it!) and am usually a few hours away from my next destination. Though Top 40 music can be great for a little bit, spending 6-8 hours in the car each week, I have lots of time to learn about and listen to new things. I think one of the most underutilized apps on a phone has to be the podcast app- it's the BEST! Podcasts are free, there are a million of them and they are a great way to keep entertained and educated while you pass the time doing cardio, riding in the car or cleaning the house! They have certainly enhanced my own life. Here is a list of my top 5 favourite podcasts (...but then also a list of another 5 because I just couldn't choose!).
If you need an "Ah Ha" moment- Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations
Short and sweet podcasts (all around 30 minutes each) which are full of big life lessons, thought provoking statements and “Ah-Ha” moments. Prepare to be challenged as Oprah discusses some pretty major topics and concepts with authors, spiritual leaders and celebrities. Get readyyyyyyyyyyy- this podcast will leave you thinking.
My favourite episodes: Glennon Doyle- “The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life” and Alanis Morissette- "Is Happiness Temporary? (Maybe That’s Ok)"
If you are looking to win pub quiz this week- Tell Me Something I Don’t Know (TMSIDK) with Stephen J. Dubner
This podcast/gameshow tells you all the things that you never thought you wanted to know or things you thought you knew, but don’t! From the incidence of dishwasher injuries to why you should lick rocks- tell me something I don’t know will make you laugh and also make you a wee bit smarter at the same time!
My favourite episodes: Episode 34: Mind Games, Episode 1- Strange Danger
If you are missing time with your girlfriends- Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristow
Guys, the girl is real, open and hilarious to listen to. It makes me want to pour a glass of pinot and be her bestie! Kaitlyn and her guests share a glass (probably more like bottles) of wine while they discuss anything and everything- I can’t tell you exactly what to expect with every episode but they are super funny, entertaining and candid.
My favourite episodes: Jillian Harris (9/5/2017), Erin Treloar (7/1//2017)
If you want to get the creative juices flowing- TED Radio Hour
The TED radio hour brings some of the best TED speakers from around the world to discuss their ideas and innovations. Each episode is centered around a common theme and host, Guy Raz, has a way of making seemingly mundane topics so interesting! Not to mention one of their latest podcasts was so on brand! Check out the episode “Press Play” where TED speakers discuss the importance of play and how it can make us smarter, more sane and more collaborative.
My favourite episodes: Press Play, The Power of Design
If you don't have time to read a biography- WTF with Marc Maron
From Sinbad to President Barak Obama, Comedian Marc Maron chats with several high profile celebrities, comedians and politicans about their lives, careers and current day hot topics. The podcast operates out of Maron’s garage and his interviewing style is unlike any other. It's funny but there is more to it than that- it's heartfelt, reflective and brutally honest. Everything about it is just perfect.
My favourite episodes: Episode 613- President Barak Obama, Episode 67- Robin Williams
I know I said I was picking my top 5 but that was like picking favourite children so here is my other Top 5 (round 2!): The Minimalists Podcast, 30 for 30 Podcasts (ESPN), The Joe Rogan Experience, Freakonomics Radio and Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert.
